12 - 25 August 2003, Augustine's, Edinburgh
Gerome Ragni and James Rado’s 1967 American Tribal Love-Rock Musical tells the
story of 19 year old Claude Bukowski (Jamie Russell). Claude is torn
between his feelings of duty to fight for his country in Vietnam and
his newly discovered social conscience as he embraces the emerging
Hippie counterculture.
Theatre 14167 was proud to present its debut production at the
Edinburgh Fringe Festival, 2003.

At last, after my refusing even to review many of the shows here, I can
point visitors to a truly wonderful evening musical which will definitely
put your faith back in musicals at the festival.
The songs are stunning, the singers are fantastic, (yes, 25 of them),
and the band is to die for. Only a spirit of love could have brought
them all together, - and I am serious. It might seem impossible to
re-create the loving mood of the 1960's, since we now know the effect
of drugs and free-love, but the company sustains the mood of freedom
by, despite their huge talent, lacking the egos which could spoil the
evening. Their simple, direct, warm, intelligent humour gently seduces
us back to that exciting and liberating period, and you will not find a
company doing this musical as well as this again.

This is a production of the famous 1960’s musical telling the tale of love,
sex, drugs and psychedelia in America. The cast were strong and the songs
were well performed in this production, particularly Claude the male lead ...
the company handled the piece very well, keeping it lively and energetic and much
in the spirit of the time it was written and, though they bypassed the
all famous nudity, they did the piece proud.
THREE WEEKS
Fantastic, energetic, pulsating performances from a young cast. Nearly 2 hours
on stage with full rock band and seriously good sitar player. A whole string
of fantastic songs and individual singers. Go see "Hair" and enjoy an emotional
turmoil combined with excellent music.

Summer of Love 2003! I saw Paul Nicholas as Claude way back in the mists
of time & loved Hair with every fibre of my 17 year old being. And here I
am falling in love (and breaking my peace-loving heart) all over again.
Great songs, beautifully sung, fantastic musicians, all building up to
the intense, overwhelming and emotional climax. This hugely talented cast
absolutely capture the spirit of that time and give it current relevance.
Peace, man!

These guys are cramped into a hot, sweaty basement studio at Augustine's, but
boy do they work it. Everybody gives their all and I have never seen such an
energetic performance. The rock band sound great, especially the acid fuelled
sitar player. This production revitalises an old show and packs a real punch.
Go see it!
